Santa Monica Pier Great Recycle Collects More Than 10,000 Containers

People brought their recyclable containers to the 30 foot bin at the Santa Monica Pier over the weekend.

Last weekend, Californians showed their commitment to recycling by bringing 10,911 empty beverage containers to The Great Recycle at Santa Monica Pier.

The event was part of a national recycling initiative from beverage company HONEST Tea to help boost recycling rates, which have hovered around 30 percent for years.

A giant 30-foot recycling bin was set up on Santa Monica Pier on September 21 & 22, and participants were rewarded for each empty beverage container recycled on-site. The more beverage containers each person recycled, the more valuable the reward he or she could redeem; rewards ranged from iPad Minis and signed sports memorabilia to yoga mats, backpacks, snacks and more.  There were also games, tastings, and learning opportunities about recycling and environmental stewardship.
