Morning Scoop: The Most Boring EIR Ever?

Another new bar is set to open later this month, Venice likes a plan to erect a 720-foot zip line ride and an outrageously lengthy environmental review of the Bergamot Transit Village.

Good morning, and welcome to the "Morning Scoop." It will be foggy all day today with a high of 69 degrees and a low of 57.

  • From around the web, here's what we're reading this morning:

At least one City Councilman has already resigned to reading an "Environmental Impact Report" on the proposed Bergamot Transit Village—at more than 8,000 pages long, the state-mandated review is longer than Moby Dick, War and Peace and a number of other colossal novels combined.

Serving light meals in a relaxed bar with a Nantucket-esque feel, John Terzian's SHOREbar is set to open May 25 next to the Hungry Cat.

A proposal to install a 720-foot zip line ride this summer on Venice Beach . Two-thirds of its gross revenues are planned to be spent on emptying garbage cans and improving the public restrooms at our fair neighbor's beaches.

  • Here's what's happening today in Santa Monica:

Heal the Bay's annual "Bring Back the Beach" gala will honor Matthew Hart, former president and chief operating officer of Hilton Hotels Corp.; actress Julia Roberts and her husband Danny Moder; and longtime Heal the Bay board member Amy Smart.

A that features inspiring movies and benefits good causes kicks off at 2 p.m. with a screening of Roadmap to Apartheid, a movie that draws connections between South Africa and Palestine.

I wish Santa Monica would start treating Main Street like it was part of the city. They have shortened the street metered parking times which have a terrible impact on the local businesses, and do absolutely nothing to help or encourage people to come into the area. There needs to be a multi-floored parking structure near main and Ashland, Hill, or one of those streets so people will stay and shop and eat. And those of us who live in the neighborhood aren't fighting for a parking space by our homes.

Vice President Joe Biden tried Tuesday to rally Congress to act on gun control legislation, sayingRead More that "the country has changed and [politicians] will pay a political price for not getting engaged and dealing with gun safety." "As proud as the president and I am of the progress we have made, we need Congress to act," Biden said in a speech delivered at the White House. "The American people are demanding it. We need to make sure that the voices of the ones we lost are the loudest ones we here in this fight." Specifically, Biden was referring to politicians like Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), who saw her approval rating plummet after she voted against legislation that would expand background checks. Sen. Jeff Flake's (R-AZ) and Sen. Mark Begich's (D-AK) ratings also took a nosedive. On the otherside, Democrats in red states, like Sens. Mary Landrieu (LA) and Kay Hagan (NC), got a slight boost in their approval ratings after they voted in favor of the gun control legislation. The vice president also released a set of federal guidelines Tuesday for developing high quality emergency operations for schools, higher education institutions and places of worship. "We made sure the guide reflects all the lessons we've learned over the years," he said.
