Blog | Here Comes the Developer PAC Money. What Favors Will it Buy?

City Council Candidate John Smith responds to the news of developer dollars pouring into Santa Monica's campaign.

Dear Santa Monica Voter,

Since Day One of our grassroots campaign for City Council, I've railed against the over-development that is growing us into gridlock and threatens our quality of life in Santa Monica. It's the biggest reason I decided to run for office. Now comes word of a new PAC (Political Action Committee), led by Santa Monica's biggest developer, that is throwing $175,000 dollars (and probably more) into the campaigns of the two incumbents and two other candidates.

Major Developer Funneling Money Into New PAC

Developers and their dollars have too much influence on our City Council, which is supposed to represent your interests. Many Council members and candidates take money from these developers, and then support their mega-projects, which will add more traffic and congestion to our city.

But you have the power to stop it.

Santa Monica has the most progressive, politically-engaged voters in the nation. It's time for you to stand firm against this tide of developer dollars and support a candidate like me, who will not accept money from developers.

As the blizzard of slick, full-page, color-glossy brochures starts showing up in your mailbox, I hope you will ask yourself two questions: 1) Who do you think paid for that pretty mailer? and 2) What favors will be asked in return?

Your vote is not for sale.  And neither is Santa Monica.  If candidates need to take developer money to win a seat on the Council, maybe they shouldn't win a seat, period.

You have the power to make sure they don't.

Sincerely,

John C. Smith
