Venice beach surf hooligans strike again.

There is a very small group of Venice beach surfer who are known about town as being LOCALS that surf by the Venice beach pier most days. And this group of locals (that term is used with disdain and dishonors  all real surfers,  and will hence forth be used as a derogatory term), persist in hassling and attempting to intimidate other surfers who come to Venice pier to surf. Mind you these are 30,40,50 year olds Though they may have been raised in Venice They never surfed the pier until the last 10 years prior to that it was Bicknell st, POV,  or Ocean Park. Now they try to claim the Venice pier with an  angry localism mentality  as if they have been surfing there for a hundred years or like the Hawaiians who had their land and heritage taken away from them. With their strength in number and gang mentality they verbally abuse and threaten other surfer in the lineup, vandalize cars and steal property form the beach. And local law enforcement, beaches and harbors and life guards inability or lack of concern to do anything about this group and the laid back non-confrontational attitudes of real surfers only emboldens this group of what can only be describes as small minded losers. Who haven’t realized that dog town is dead, the 70’s are over and the beach doesn’t belong to them. It’s like a 3 year old playing in the sand box thinking that it is all his until one day other kids start playing in the box and then the temper tantrum ensues. Or more accurately a has been or never was in its lashing out in its death throes.   And just like little kids with a bully’s mentality, they only harass when they have their friends around to show off for, by themselves they cower and sulk by and their true meek personal is revealed.   This is further revealed by their lack of balls to fight for what they think is theirs, I could respect someone who is willing to fight and go to jail for something they believe in, but to vandalize some ones car or steal their property, or verbally abuse is the sign of a coward and I have no respect for cowards.  The worst part about them is that they are teaching their children that is the way you act. I have personally witnessed 11, 12, 13 year old kid trying to stare down grown men, call them kooks ( derogatory  term meaning bad or beginning surfer), and drop in on their waves( which means steal their wave). This goes against everything surfing is supposed to be. The funny thing is, that the very few people who are local icons and would have any room to be *A* holes, are actually okay, they don’t go out of their way to be nice, but let’s face it that’s not a requirement in life, but at least they are not overt dicks.

I’ve documented each occasion however the  police  can only help if you have a video or the person confess to them, the lifeguard don’t want to get involved because they have to see these guys every day and one of the locals is a lifeguard and  just like cops don’t want to tell on cops, same mentality.  And beaches and Harbors are to far removed from the situation and have no power to combat it.

I run a local surf lesson business in the area, Kapowui Surf Club In the beginning I attempted to make an effort and be overly nice, showing respect to locals letting them take the best waves, not dropping in on them, not saying anything when they dropped in on me, not doing lessons where they surf, telling all of my lessons to respect the locals and surf somewhere else until they became better surfers.  I later realized this was the wrong approach, this only emboldened them to do it more. Bullies only pick on someone whom they think is weaker then themselves. However once I started to getting threatened, told I wasn’t allowed to conduct business at THEIR beach,  my clients  being threatened and verbally abused, my cars being vandalized, I changed my attitude toward them and my tactics. No longer taking their abuse verbal abuse I gave it right back to them, which blew their minds. How dare one person stand up to all of us and expose us for the wussies we are,  whhaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!

…………     I refuse to cower down and be run off, you I’m an alpha so you only have 4 options as for as I’m concerned ,  #1 continue your lame loser cowardly acts and perpetuate your own self misery #2 accept that times have changed and learn how to share,  #3 leave, #4 kill me. Because the only way you are getting me to leave Venice is in a body bag and I’ll make sure mine is not the only one.

At one time I was hoping to eventually make friends with your group but now that I know how you are I would never want to be associated with such group of douches.

If you taught your children how to respect other people, share, and fair play maybe one day if they become good enough surfers they would have a chance on the pro tour. But if they show up with the attitudes you are teaching them they will be weeded out like every other “A” hole has been no matter how good they were.  And at the very least you would be raising thoughtful fair citizen’s not self-centered brat with a chip on their shoulders who will go nowhere in life, just like you.

What you don’t realize is the more you hassle me the happier I become, because I know I’m winning. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be for you to have been emasculated by me and to realize you have no power at all. Let’s see I run a successful business at 3 locations in  Marina Del Rey, Santa Monica and Venice beach hire 5+ local instructors each year and pay salaries and taxes for them, I spend 10s of thousands on marketing with local business, I  purchasing equipment and supplies at local business,

I bring in tourist dollars, after lessons they stay and eat at local restaurants shop at local business, I pay the city for fees, licenses, and permits. So all told I probably generate a half a million or more for the local economy each year. Google a multibillion dollar international company picked my company to showcase. They even shot a commercial of my company in Venice beach bringing in countless dollars for the city with fees and permits. This international commercial  will make my company grown and stimulate even more local business and tax dollars, I bring happiness and joy to people’s lives, I perpetuate the California iconic lifestyle with my 2 classic VW buses that i use for my business (the ones you vandalize ).  This is what I’ve accomplished here in less than 3 years and you  have been here 40 + years and what have you done other than claim something that doesn’t belong to you and maybe pay for your parking meter.  You are everything that’s wrong with surfing magnified and personified.

Why don’t you take this time for an intellectual rebuttal I know you can write since you did so well with your key on my cars, its okay if you can’t spell, use auto correct.  I understand why you are jealous of my success, my style, my aura, all the things that you desire so fervently and will never have come so easy to me with no ego attached.

I suggest all new and experienced surfers surf right by the pier until these guys learn they don’t own the ocean. Ignoring a roach infestation and just hoping it will go away is the wrong approach. Stop letting bad behavior go unpunished. So to all visiting surfers, tourist, and local residents who are tired of these punks, if you see any of the fore mentioned, start filing reports with the police, call your city council, beaches and harbors representatives, captain of the lifeguards, take photos and videos of any vandalism, theft, or harassment…..

BTW I’m offering $5000 to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest and convictions of whoever vandalized my VW bus.

Stories like this anger me to no end. My sentiments the same. I think some of these goons surf Topanga too. I've had a run in a few times and have seen what happens out in the water and it's shameful. Especially where there are grown men behaving this way. They are losers and a disgrace to being a Human.

I can't believe this! Be careful. These people are idiots.

I grew up in the barrios of East LA. I lived thru this gang mentality, violence and vandalism all my youthful years. I worked hard to get an education and get out of that very hostile environment. I first served my country in the Marine Corps and was lucky to get stationed in Hawaii where I learned to surf. Because of my dark skin I was more easily accepted by the locals than my lighter skin Marine buddies. However, their posturing and intimidation is more of a rite of passage. As long as you showed respect for the line up, take your turn at the right time, not drop in on anybody and put up with the hackling about your board or shorts they left you alone. After a few weeks of showing how much you like surfing they became friendly and eventually good friends. They were nothing like these ass*oles. Now that I'm nearly 50 and have the means to enjoy surfing the great California cost, I find these ass*oles again. And worse, I'm teaching my son to surf and about the surfing communities bond thru mutual love of the ocean and its waves only to have these ass*oles prove me wrong in front of him. These ass*oles were much bigger than us, but luckily my brother, who also surfs , and I know how to handle their type. Plus my brother was packing, legally, he is a sheriff, they basically crapped in their pants. Let me know, I know people, and they will show up and show these mother*uckers what real gangsters are like. Good luck!!

Sorry you're lost with Google Beth? Whatever THAT means?! Pfft..beth? Be quiet..the adults are trying to speak.. Anywhooo, GREAT Blog. This happened to us on C Street in Ventura. Cowards broke out my back window. Said things like, "we hear guys get raped out here"?! WHAAA?? My husband chased them, offered to "settle it on the beach", etc.. All of them, COWARDS. They think they're crazy till they meet CRAZY! LOL. A bunch of old skinny tattooed assholes, uneducated.. Poor.. Just lame in general. Trying to hold on to all their teen moments? Not really sure what makes grown men become so gross like that. Loved LOVED this! Thank you for the great read! Made my morning!!

Great post! My blood's boiling for you, man. My crew and I will have our eyes on the scene for you, and if we're in the water you'll have some heavy backup, bro. Grew up surfing around here and hate these motherfuckers with a passion! You're not alone. It's time the authorities knock some of their heads together before someone else does it for them.

Great post. Only thing worse than car vandalism is graffiti. Hope they get caught.
Cass January 20, 2014 at 01:19 PM
Good on you. Very much support your cause and will surf with confidence rather than fear there

It's really sad that people like that destroy the entire experience that is surfing. I stopped surfing the Venice jetty because of this behavior, and my friends that lived just a couple of blocks away even stopped surfing there. There's what I like to call an "old man mafia" at a few spots, mainly Venice, Topanga, and C-Street. The only one I'll even bother with is C-Street because there is enough room to work. But those guys are notorious for snaking and then blaming people for dropping in, when in fact they snaked. Kind of ridiculous that it's come to this.
Tony fitzgerald January 20, 2014 at 08:21 PM
Your comments make no sense, if you use five or more locations, why worry about one spot. It seems to me that you are abusing the local area with so many surf camps. I wonder if you are licensed by the county? Especially as I thought there was a lottery to get slots on the beach & would seem strange that you have so many spots. Just cut back on the commercial side of surfing and let the surfers surf in peace. Stay cool and worry less about the money side.
mimi January 22, 2014 at 03:18 PM
given that the police are unwilling to intervene, it's too Too Too Too dangerous to continue challenging these goons over surf turf. A few years back a young man was murdered at a surfing beach in La Jolla. He stood his ground in a surf turf war and paid with his life. Not worth it. Find another beach.
Logan Fonbershtein January 30, 2014 at 01:49 PM
you sound like a major douche bag, i mean kook. like a little kid who didnt get picked for the team. its a shame you have to list all the things you have accomplished....like " look at me , look at me " . who wants surf classes at our beaches? go to raging waters im the simulator!!! locals are locals. this is our beach....yes OUR BEACH. good luck my friend......
Sean James January 30, 2014 at 03:13 PM
Great post but I'm concerned that you are taking beginners to places that are established surf spots , surf lessons at the beach should be far and away from places that are in use as active surf spots . its the same as teaching classes on the black diamond run on the mountain ,you don't do it you go to beginners area . My other question is did you get approval from the city to run your business at this location ? do you have a license to do so ? just curious , there seems to be a lot of entitlement going on in this post .

bbbbwwwwhhhhaaaaa.......bbbbwwwhhhhaaaaa! I to live in another part of Los Angeles that has been infiltrated by hipsters, fags and others........Locals only Bitch!.....Sounds like someone got butt hurt.....Maybe YOU should be more respectful of the locals or simply stay in Beverly Hills or go to Malibu with all of the other rich fags.
Charles B. Katz January 31, 2014 at 04:36 PM
Venice has always been localized and always will be and I think just about Everyone knows this. The best thing for you to do is Just go find another beach!! Simple as that!! If you go back to the pier you are asking for problems and who needs that.. Drive North up the PCH just before you get to Sunset Cyn. there is a perfect beach for your beginner surf lessons with a much mellower crowd that you will have a better chance at getting along with. Good Luck!!

surf alone anywhere and the locals will usually be cool. the kooks are the ones showing up with large groups of people and expecting the locals to share
Mirko February 07, 2014 at 06:43 PM
" Speaking of kooks, you should beat it..." How does that statement sound? Some of this logic is silly seeing some of the comments that have been posted, which sadly completely disregard the main issues of the blogpost. 1) it's America. If you think you can tell someone where they can or cannot surf, then you belong in the Taliban, or living in other freedom lacking country. 2) the dude who posted on the blog got his Sh*t ruined. There is no excuses for this. Just because he is teaching a class? And has 2 or 3 students out in the water?? 3) the main thing in surfing is to enjoy yourself while practicing understanding safe surf etiquette. If you don't know I what it is, you can google "surf etiquette". Just because someone surfs a spot for 35 years means nothing if he is dropping in on people and snaking and bullying out in the lineup(I've seen this more often than the break newcomer ie opposite). Unfortunately, the intelligence factor is lacking among the individuals who feel they have an above all or privilege mentality. You simply don't break someone's Sh*t or their face...or you will end up in jail. you calmly explain the rules and the proper etiquette out there, with the purpose and goal that everybody can have a wave or two. I've surfed alone at most sensitive spots the entire coast of California. I've seen the mentality and have been confronted while alone. Topaz of all places...topaz!!! Lol. And Usually the people who take it upon themselves to threaten are losers, meth heads, washout, nobody's who have more bark than bite and resort to chickens Sh*t behavior like smashing ones vehicle. You just don't mess with someone's car. That's Totally chickensh*t.
hellwood February 07, 2014 at 08:26 PM
yeah, I don't think beating people up and damaging their belongings is any fun. I do however disagree with your "surf etiquette". beach breaks have waves everywhere, so there is usually no need to paddle right into the middle of a pack of locals, and act like because this is America blah blah...

Thank you all for your support. And to clarify, i do not have do not crowd my locations with camps. This are single lesson permits. And i have to do my lessons in my permitted location or i can get fined or lose my permit location. And let me clarify also, when i say Venice pier, my actual location is Driftwood, 3 block south of where these losers surf. I've never done a lesson in the middle of a pack of locals, i have more respect for surfers than that. Even if there are a lot of surfers in my permitted locations, i move to spot where no one is at to accommodate them, risking my permits to be respectful. I've pretty much let this go because I found out who it is and that the adults put the minors up to it knowing they wouldn't get in much trouble. So instead of pressing meaningless charges against the minors, i'm waiting for them to turn 18. And then i'll decide i how i wish to proceed. i have 2 years to press charges. i now keep a loaded gun by my bed, and have installed security cameras. I've given these pussies numerous opportunities to handle this like men, either by talking it out of slugging it out and they chose to hide behind minors and vandalism rather than words or fisticuffs. Regardless, i truly appreciate the people who got this article and sided with justice rather than myopic troglodytes.
Concerned Citizen February 24, 2014 at 05:30 PM
Your actual location may be Driftwood, however that doesn't stop you from taking business away from local businesses. How about the local shops right on Washington by the pier that do surf lessons. I know that you didn't go into their shop and talk to them before you took their lessons away from them. You also park your van right at the entrance of the parking lot in the summer time and sell items out of your van, violating your permit. I don't agree with the locals at the pier. I grew up surfing there, and still do, when the waves are good. However, contrary to what you wrote, you made no attempt to be respectful to the locals when you showed up. You showed up and tried to be a "bro", rather than introduce yourself and explain what you were doing. You paddled out right into the center of the lineup on good days and attempted to take waves from people who have put their time in, and surf there all the time, myself included. Rather than being respectful like you say you were, you violated every rule in the book, even laying hands on someone in the water. If you spent your time, and worked yourself into the lineup like everyone else, you might have been respected. But you didn't. You tried to force yourself in, which doesn't work. No one cares how successful your business is, or how much money you make. You do crowd locations, and you violate your permits. You have held lessons at the pier, violating your permit once again. Your article sounds more like someone who is trying to boost your ego, and get people on your side, than someone who is trying to fix the problem. If you want to fix the problem, apologize for your actions in and out of the water. Attempt to make peace with the businesses that you stole business from. Stop violating your permits, and be respectful in the water. This is a one-sided story, not one that shows or talks about the bad things you did to put yourself in the situation that you are in. You can cry and whine all you want, but until you attempt to better the situation you have put yourself in, you will get nowhere. You need to realize that you made mistakes, and either fix them, or deal with the consequences that you got from your actions. Not all of us locals are bad people. We want to be able to surf the spot that we grew up surfing with some order in the lineup. Granted, on your given day, the pier sucks. Plain and simple. But on the rare days that we have good conditions, sandbars, and the right tide, we want to be able to have a good time. We don't want a crowd like Malibu, Topanga, Sunset, or the like. Grow up, realize that you made mistakes, and deal with them like a grown up that you say you are. If you choose not to, then don't, just don't expect the situation that you have put yourself in to change at all.
Mirko February 24, 2014 at 05:50 PM
Wow, that was really illogical. Stay on subject. The original post dealt with vandalism. Your point about asking local businesses for permissions to set up shop? Really? What does that have to do with anything? You think Burger King asked McDonalds if it was okay to setup shop across the street? Or taco bell? Its called Merica'. No need to be a silly redneck. there is a service provided, and he is doing something positive. What does permits have to do with anything? Also, the poster already stated that he doesn't give lessons in the middle of a line up. Seriously...think about it. Your logic makes zero sense. But if it makes sense to you, live by it and "beat it kook". What right do you have posting on here anyways? you're just a newbie right? LOL. damn, that's really sad. you give me no hope for humanity.
Charles B. Katz February 24, 2014 at 06:02 PM
Mirko "Concerned Citizen" hit it right on the money!!!
Concerned Citizen February 24, 2014 at 07:29 PM
Mirko, Its not about asking local businesses for permission, it is the decency to let a local small business know that you are going to be doing the same thing as them in the summer time, and that you will try not to steal sales from them. Burger King, Taco Bell, etc are all multi-billion dollar companies, so no, I do not think that they asked each other if they could setup shop across the street. But that is on a level that is completely irrelevant, because small businesses operate on whole different terms. It is disrespectful to come in, with a bright orange and yellow bus, and take business from someone who has been there, and has established clientele. I'm not sure how I'm being a "silly redneck". Don't get your feelings hurt because I don't agree with the poster. And really, "its called Merica'"? No, its not. Its called Venice Beach, and we won't tolerated being disrespected in our home. Although I know you really want to believe everything the poster said, but don't you think that you may want to also take into consideration that he is telling a one-sided story, and that he has, and does teach surf lessons just outside of the line-up. I didn't tell him to live by his actions and "beat it kook". I actually never used kook once in my whole post. And really, what right do I have posting on here? My right is actually given to me by the first amendment which states "The First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, impeding the free exercise of religion, abridging the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances." So that, my dear Mirko is what gives me the right to post on here, regardless if I am a "newbie" or not. If your so into "Merica'", as you so blatantly stated in your response to me, I would assume that you would know that already. I agree and support localizing lineups, as when I go to a spot, I will respect the locals. You give respect to get respect. The poster did not give respect, plain and simple. And good luck trying to localize a message board, and telling me to beat it. Its the internet, I don't think you can localize that, but like I said, good luck.
Mirko February 24, 2014 at 08:18 PM
You didn't get the point...I was applying your mentality to this dumb message board...but you didn't get it because you actually thought I was serious. Localizing a message board. LOL. Again, you're siding with lawless idiots...as there is no justification to breaking somebody's Sh*t. Sorry, the law isn't on that side. I hope a person with that mentality doesnt mess with a wrong SEaL one day, throw him over the edge, and have him gut them like a goat. Sure, you can tell him, "wah I've been surfing here for years"..he'd respond, "I've been fighting against terrorist longer than you". The ocean in Venice is a public resource..etiquette goes both ways. You're making a lot of assumptions of the blogger/poster/guy with bright yellow bus that are stretching it. Permits? Stealing business? Waaaahhhhhhh no respect? Too funny!!! This is comical!
Concerned Citizen February 24, 2014 at 08:32 PM
I'm not assuming anything, I'm basing my statements off of the interactions I have had with him and his employees, and the interactions I have viewed. I'm not justifying breaking someone's sh*t, I am simply explaining why it happened, and exposing the other side of the story that the poster did not state. Its not my mentality, I didn't come in here being rude and forceful, and I have not once called him a kook, or any other derogatory term in which I would deserve to be "localized." You give respect to get respect. I'm putting another side to the story, you don't have to disrespect me, and be rude because you don't agree with my side.
