Education Foundation Seeks Student, Community Leadership

Monday October 24th was the first official Community Leadership Committee meeting for the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation, which will be celebrating its 30th anniversary next year. The Ed Foundation raises money for the Santa Monica - Malibu Unified School District to help with programming for Arts, Athletics, and Academics. As we went around the table making introductions I felt even more lucky to be a part of this group. With the exception of myself, everyone had or has kids currently in one of the schools. It always amazes me how passionate and dedicated the parents in this community are to give back to the schools-even after their kids have long graduated. With the formation of committees this year the Education Foundation is ready to make even bigger things happen.

Over the years I have I gotten to work with kids of all ages and help them even more with their fitness and nutrition goals. One of the things I have learned along the way is that many of the students have an incredible number of talents and skills that they are excited to share given the right opportunities.

We will be working on various projects this coming school year and are looking for students from schools within the district to work with some of the committee members. This is an amazing way for students to add to their resume, give back to their school district and help show us how they experience and see things as a student in a Santa Monica or Malibu school.  We need students that love to:

• plan events (help with events that the Education Foundation will be producing this year)
• take pictures (help us with various projects we need students to capture pictures for)
• produce, edit or write short scripts for a video series (perfect for aspiring film makers)
• be on camera (we need student testimonials and questions/answers on video)

We are also looking for more passionate community members to join some of the various committees. We currently have committees for:

Resource Development and Marketing (fundraising!), Program (impact in the classroom!), Leadership (getting our name out in the community!) and Operations & Finance (ensuring best practices for the organization!).
