Letter: Remembering the Legacy of Paul Conrad

Today is the third anniversary of the passing of artist and peacemaker Paul Conrad, who created the Santa Monica 'Chain Reaction' sculpture in Santa Monica.

Wednesday, Sept. 4  is the third anniversary of the passing of Paul Conrad. He was truly a talented and creative artist and a dedicated humanitarian and peacemaker. He cared about people and the future of our planet.

I know the Save Chain Reaction Campaign is passionately committed to saving and restoring his monumental peace sculpture in the Santa Monica Civic Center for so many honorable and respectful reasons, including the following:

  • It is an iconic, unique and creative public art sculpture.
  • It has been designated as a Santa Monica City Landmark. I
  • t was a generous gift to the City.
  • It warns of the very real dangers of nuclear escalation. It stimulates dialogue and debate. It is a message of peace.

I believe there is another reason people are working so hard to protect and refurbish 'Chain Reaction': Because it is simply the right thing to do to honor the late Paul Conrad for his truly timely and important 'Chain Reaction' creation.
