Blog: Parking Tips for the L.A. Marathon

This Sunday is the annual LA Marathon, sponsored by ASICS. The 26.2 mile endurance run from Dodger Stadium to Santa Monica Beach will once again gather spectators from across the city as runners make their way through Los Angeles. And while Angelenos deal with large crowds and traffic jams on a daily basis, there is no crowd or traffic jam as large and hectic as the one created by the LA Marathon. 

With several major streets closed throughout the entire city, getting around can be tricky. As thousands of people head towards the same destination (the Finish Line at Santa Monica Beach), you can be sure of one thing that WON’T be around at the end of the race; an open parking space!  

Reserve Parking:
If you’re running in the marathon, take advantage of your special circumstances and reserve a parking spot before anyone else!  Parking spaces will be reserved at most downtown Santa Monica parking structures and there will be a shuttle waiting to transport you from Santa Monica to the Starting Line at Dodger Stadium.  

Parking Lots & Garages:
For those watching the runners cross the Finish Line, there are several parking structures and lots located throughout downtown Santa Monica that will be open for the LA Marathon. Check them all out on this LA Marathon parking map. If you park at any of at these lots there will most likely be a “special event rate” so expect to pay between $15-$25. Finding cheap LA Marathon parking can be tough but we think the following locations will have the best rates:

120 Wilshire Parking Garage

Street Parking:
There will also be street meter parking available throughout downtown Santa Monica, however, you will still have to pay the $1-$2 per hour rate depending on which part of the city you park at. Keep in mind that there is a 2 hour parking limit, after which you will need to find a new spot. These meters take credit cards so you don’t need to worry about having change. If you want to park on the street you can find available parking meters right from your car by using the free ParkMe smartphone app.

One of the most important things to remember is to arrive EARLY! The good spots are the first ones to go, and don’t forget that the traffic will be heavy because of the numerous street closures.
