SMO Flight Schools Throw a Meatless Bone to Airport

Santa Monica Airport flight schools offer to reduce their nighttime activity, but don't go far enough.

In response to the Patch story:

The flight schools at Santa Monica Airport are only interested one thing; their bottom line profits.

They are now waving this meatless bone to the community because they are beginning to feel that the future of their businesses are under a real threat. I find it ironic that the flight schools use the term harmony in their letter to Santa Monica City officials(see attacnment).

Harmony is a musical term, and in no way can the constant repulsive noise from pattern flying be linked to harmony.

The fact is that a society that accepts such an unnecessary safety risk from pattern flying operations at an airport immediately surrounded with high-density populated neighborhoods is as guilty as those who are responsible for allowing it to begin with. Read the City of Santa Monica's press release (see the PDF to the right) regarding this flight school offer.

Clearly there are safety and public health concerns surrounding Santa Monica Airport. The “voluntary” offer by the flight schools is another reason why the acronym CRAAP is so appropriate.
