To Starch or Not to Starch

Every time you visit a dry cleaner and drop off shirts for laundering you are probably asked if you want starch.  How do you really know?

Starch is used on shirts and lab coats that are brought to the cleaners to be laundered.  Starch helps natural fabrics, specifically cotton and linen, hold their shape (dimensional stability) after pressing.  The style of the garment can often help you decide whether to request that starch be added.  The more starch used, the stiffer or crisper the garment becomes.  Starch is not effective on man-made fabrics such as polyester, nylon or spandex.

In all cases, using starch is a matter of personal preference and is based on what you believe will help you look and feel your best.
