2 Men Arrested Over Beating Outside Bar

The men, both residents of Arizona, have been charged with attempted murder.

Two men from Arizona were arrested Friday in connection with that took place last month outside , spokespersons for the and Maricopa County Sheriff's Office told Santa Monica Patch on Saturday. Both suspects have been charged with attempted murder.

The beating took place Sept. 22 at approximately 2:20 a.m., and the victim was an unidentified Santa Monica resident. The victim, who was working out at the time, was severely injured during the beating. According to the Maricopa County spokesperson, the attack was random, and the victim was a 45-year-old movie producer who was walking and carrying weights. The perpetrators used the weights to beat the victim from behind, the spokesperson said.

The victim sustained a collapsed skull, multiple brain bleeds, a broken jaw, and fractures to the neck and back. The victim is expected to survive but could suffer long-term effects from the beating.

The suspects are Brett Davis, a 25-year-old from Fountain Hills, Ariz; and Bryan Hale, a 24-year-old from Tempe, Ariz. Maricopa County Sheriff's officials believe they had been drinking before leaving the bar.

Davis and Hale were arrested Friday night in Arizona by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and other local jurisdictions, with cooperation from the SMPD. They are being held in the Maricopa County Jail pending extradition, and their bail has been set at $1,030,000.

Santa Monica police contacted Maricopa County Sheriff's officials in regards to one of the suspects, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. After conducting surveillance on the suspect, the officials then identified the second suspect and arrested them both.

"Investigators with the Santa Monica Police department have been working on several leads which were developed during the first few days after [the incident]," the SMPD spokesperson said. "Following up on many of the leads, investigators were able to identify the two suspects ... and put enough evidence together to obtain a filing from the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office."

Davis and Hale were in the Los Angeles area to do work for an unidentified moving company. They were reportedly seen fleeing the scene following the beating. Davis and Hale are due to be extradited to Los Angeles in the next few days.

"I am proud of the hard work by my deputies," Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said in a statement. "These arrests came to a successful conclusion with the interstate coordination of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and the Santa Monica Police Department."
