Additional Stabbing Alleged in Santa Monica Murder

Prosecutors file two charges against man accused of killing his former classmate at a Santa Monica party.

The Santa Monica man accused of murdering his high school classmate, also allegedly stabbed a minor in the hand as she attempted to break up the deadly fight, police said Friday.

Los Angeles County prosecutors have charged Ryan Tyler Bright with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder in the killing of Jensen Gray, 27, of Laguna Beach.

Bright is scheduled to enter a plea July 26, according to the District Attorney's office.

The former Laguna Beach High School students were at a party early Wednesday morning at an apartment in downtown Santa Monica .

A Santa Monica Police Department spokeswoman has said the men knew each other, but would not comment on the extent of their relationship.

Bright, 26, had only recently relocated to Santa Monica. It was not clear if he was living in the at 425 Broadway St., where the murder occurred.

He and Gray had multiple convictions in Orange County for drug possession and other charges.

Online jail records showed Bright remains jailed in lieu of $1 million bail.

Thanks to the SN City Council's policy of letting developers have their way with the city, we can expect to have more incidents like this in these large, crappy but expensive, so-called *upscale* developments. If one of these men with prior convictions for drug dealing in Orange County was actually renting or occupying an apartment at the Archstone, it means that the Archstone management is not doing its due diligence in screening applicants, as convictions for drug dealing would have been picked up in a 3-way credit check. Meanwhile, Mom and Pop owners of the smaller, charming buildings built prior to 1978 are hamstrung by draconian rent control measures that these larger, newer buildings are not subject to.

Both the alledged murderer and the victim appear to have been on the other side of the law for years. Unfortunately it came to this and justice should demand a heavy penalty if Mr.Bright is proven guilty. It would be interesting to know exactly who hosted the party and who the other guests were. Was this a den for drug sales or prostitution? Should SMPD have a closer look at that building in the wee hours? We shall see.

I live here with my young family and didn't hear a thing that night until the police arrived and the girls became hysterical, Its a lovely apartment block really and all the tenants I have met have been very nice! I never saw this man before and never heard of any problems relating to drugs. Honestly I have lived all over the world and find this place among the safest I have ever lived in. I think that this was a one off event and A very unfortunate one to have happened at all.
