Burglary Suspect Sets Off Helicopter Search

Police suspect the man stole a flat screen TV from a Main Street restaurant.

A 33-year-old man suspected of stealing a flat screen TV from a local restaurant was arrested early this morning after a helicopter crew spotted him hiding on a roof, police said.

At 12:32 a.m. the Santa Monica Police Department dispatched officers to at 2820 Main Street, where a burglar alarm was going off. Officers arrived and spotted a suspect on the roof, said Santa Monica police Sgt. Richard Lewis.

They set up a perimeter and asked for assistance from the Los Angeles Police Department, which sent two helicopters, he said. The suspect, later identified as Cory Hoffman, was spotted by the choppers on the roof at 2802 Main St.

"After several loud speaker announcements, the suspect surrendered without incident," Lewis said.

Hoffman was arrested and the TV was recovered at about 2:30 a.m.
