2nd Sentencing Delay in Killing of Tourist

Paul Edmond Carpenter is now scheduled to be sentenced March 12 in the murder of German tourist Horst Fietze.

Sentencing was postponed again Wednesday for the fourth person convicted of slaying a German tourist 14 years ago in Santa Monica.

Paul Edmond Carpenter, 34, was deported from Jamaica where he evaded arrest for nearly a decade following the killing. He is now scheduled to be sentenced March 12.

He faces up to life in state prison for murdering the tourist, Horst Fietze.

Fietze was on what friends described as a dream vacation when he was shot to death Oct. 12, 1998 as Carpenter and three others attempted to rob him not far from the luxury beachfront hotel, .

The murder was highly publicized, as it occurred five years after the murder of a German tourist in Miami.

Soon after the shooting, investigators arrested three of the four suspects, including the gunman. Southern California residents Lamont Dion Santos, Tyrina Griffin and Roshana Latiesha Roberts have each been convicted of murder and sentenced.

Carpenter was put on trial in October 2011 after being deported from Jamaica, where authorities alleged he had been hiding under an alias. Following a two-week jury trial, . 

His sentencing date was originally scheduled for Nov. 30,

The new sentencing date is March 12. It was not immediately clear what has prompted the delays.

According to online jail records, Carpenter remains in custody at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic.
