Convicted Rapist Suspected in Girlfriend's Assault

Police allege the man injured his girlfriend April 23 in the 1700 block of Michigan.

A  woman was recovering from injuries sustained after her boyfriend, a parolee and registered sex offender, allegedly kicked her and stomped her in the chest at a Santa Monica home in the 1700 block of Michigan, police said.

The homeless couple was visiting friends April 23 when the alleged assault occurred. The woman reported that the 51-year-old man, her boyfriend of three weeks, attempted to strangle and hit her in the head with a ceramic box before allegedly kicking her to the ground and stomping on her chest.

"He told he was going to kill her and her family," said Santa Monica Police Sgt. Richard Lewis. "A witness was able to stop the attack and get the suspect to leave the unit before police arrived."

Officers were unable to find the man that day, but identified him as a homeless man on parole for rape, according to Lewis. He is registered as a sex offender in Santa Monica for charges of rape and oral copulation with a minor younger than 14.

The next morning, police used GPS to track the man through an ankle monitor he was wearing as a condition of is parole. He was arrested at the U-Haul truck rental parking lot at Lincoln Boulevard and Michigan Avenue on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats and violation of parole.
