Coroners ID Man on Motor Scooter who Collided with Police Squad Car

The Santa Monica crash is still under investigation.

A man on a motor scooter who was fatally injured in a collision with a Santa Monica police cruiser was identified today.

Walter James, 30, of Highland, died at a hospital from injuries suffered in a collision at Pico Boulevard and Fourth Street about 7:40 a.m. Saturday, according to California Highway Patrol officers and the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

The CHP is in charge of the investigation, but the agency has yet to determine who was at fault, CHP Officer Karina Munoz said.

On Sunday, however, employees of a nearby am/pm told ABC7 their video showed that James ran a red light.

The Santa Monica police officer who was driving the car went to a hospital, but she was not believed to be seriously hurt.
