DUI Checkpoint Planned for Friday

It will be the third of multiple checkpoints being conducted over the course of a year.

Santa Monica police officers will set up a sobriety and driver's license checkpoint on Friday. It will be the third of multiple checkpoints police are conducting as part of a yearlong campaign.

Police have not disclosed the location of the checkpoint.

In addition to confirming drivers' sobriety, police will be checking their license status.

"Unlicensed drivers are over-represented in fatal crashes," said Sgt. Richard Lewis of the .

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, DUI deaths fell by 16 percent from 2007 (1,132) to 2009 (950).

The California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is funding the checkpoint.
