An 83-year-old Santa Monica woman was killed Tuesday afternoon while trying to walk across the northbound lanes of Antelope Valley Freeway in Canyon Country, City News Service reports.
The accident occurred at about 1:50 p.m. near Via Princessa in Canyon Country in Santa Clarita. The woman was not immediately identified, according to City New Service.
The woman was walking from the center divider when a 64-year-old Palmdale man driving north at about 65 mph saw her, and swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid hitting her. But the front end of the car struck the woman, hurling her into the next lane, California Highway Patrol Sgt. J.P. Mair told City News Service.
She was declared dead at the scene by county firefighters. Neither alcohol or drugs was believed to have been involved, Mair said.
