Santa Monica Beach All Clear Following Explosive-Device Scare

A grenade simulator was discovered on the beach on Friday afternoon.

(Updated at 4:57 p.m.): The helicopter is no longer circling overhead. Also, the boardwalk and beach are open—only the Beach Cafe parking lot is closed.

(Updated at 4:45 p.m.): The parking lot behind the Beach Cafe has been taped off. The Pacific Coast Highway and Ocean Ave. are open. There are about six fire and police vehicles in the lot. A helicopter is circling overhead.

An explosive device has been found on , three blocks north of the , Santa Monica Police Sgt. Cody Green told Santa Monica Patch on Friday afternoon. Authorities are evacuating people from the area.

A person who was on the beach discovered the device and reported it to lifeguards at 2:50 p.m. Green said the device is a grenade simulator. He was not aware of its size.

Los Angeles County Sheriffs are en route to collect and/or dispose of the device, Green said. The , the bomb squad and hazardous-materials vehicles have also responded to the scene.
