Local Man Suspected of Beach Bathroom Sex

Santa Monica resident Isauro Benavides and 17 others were arrested in an undercover operation that found men were having sex in public restroom in Manhattan Beach.

A 41-year-old Santa Monica man has been arrested in an undercover sting at a Manhattan Beach public restroom where more than a dozen were reportedly having sex.

In total, there were 18 men arrested on suspicion of any of the following charges: soliciting/engaging in lewd conduct in public place; loitering in/around public toilet for the purpose of engaging/soliciting lewd/unlawful act; utilizing a peephole in a restroom/invasion of privacy; resisting arrest and indecent exposure.

It was not immediately clear what charges the Santa Monica man, Isauro Benavides, Jr., is facing.

The investigation was prompted by lifeguards who told the police department that they had seen increased foot traffic near the restroom on the beach at Marine Avenue.

The same people were returning, some of the bathroom visits were taking more than an hour, and more than one set of feet could be seen in the stalls, according to Stephanie Martin, public information officer for the Manhattan Beach Police Department

Manhattan police began their undercover operation in early March.

OK, gross me out.....and that is a "good" neighborhood!
It is a bit suspect, though.... they say that several people are involved but only named the hispanic one..... is this racial profiling/prejudice???
Jenna Chandler (Editor) April 3, 2012 at 08:02 pm
Each of the suspects were named—hop on over to Manhattan Beach to see all 18 http://manhattanbeach.patch.com/articles/locals-arrested-in-mb-bathroom-sting#pdf-9486603. I only reported Benavides' name because he's a Santa Monica resident.

Ms. Chandler,
I don't think you understand the seriousness of what you're doing here. I think I'm correct in the fact that all of these charges are misdemeanors. Also, they are all what is referred to as 'victimless crimes'. More importantly, unless the Patch intends to start publishing the names and of the Santa Monica residents who are regularly arrested for solicitation on Lincoln Blvd, this is definitely motivated by the assumption that the men in question are gay and is most certainly prejudicial and biased. What I think you completely fail to take into account is that the majority of these men are probably deeply closeted and most likely married and even have children. This kind of reporting certainly went out of fashion in the 1960's and you would do yourself well to take a moment to see how gays were treated before the Stonewall riots and how the gay civil rights movement started. This story has no business on this community news page unless you're simply serving as a tool for the Mahattan Beach Police Department.

Ms. Chandler,
I agree with most of what Mr. Mack posted above. Your article is reckless, gaybash-baiting copy. Not too impressive. Mike Gutierrez

It seems that some commenters here, namely Patrick Mack and Mike Gutierrez want certain news items censored. I wonder how they decide what we should or should not be informed of.

So you are saying that sex in public bathrooms is acceptable? What kind of nonsense is this? Get a motel room or go home. I dont care what sexual orientation one is, there is no reason to subject others to people who need sexual gratification so badly they have to do it in public places. This is a public matter and it should be exposed in a community news post. We are the community and news is news. Your thinking is distorted to say the least.
Carl Hamilton April 4, 2012 at 03:24 pm
I would hope they continue to report the names of people who are arrested for lewd acts in public places where families and children visit. Like, Steve said, regardless of sexual orientation -- if you don't want your name out there for getting busted for such an act, then don't take the risk and find a more private place for it. I have no qualms with what anyone chooses to do in their own privacy, none whatsoever.
marcopolo April 4, 2012 at 03:28 pm
Hardly gay bashing Mike. The guy was a SaMo resident, who got arrested for breaking the law. Don't want the embarrassment of your name out there tied to a lewd/criminal act? Don't take the risk.
Patrick Mack April 4, 2012 at 03:34 pm
@ Saltwater - Have you ever seen them report on local solicitation charges by heterosexuals ? Let alone publish names, pictures and birth dates ?
brad April 4, 2012 at 04:08 pm

You should reconsider your career. There's no money or security in a rag like this. Which isn't to say there's no value. But it's truly only worth it if you tackle stories from interesting angles. What you've done here is further expose a potentially closeted sad sack already publicly and callously shamed by the MBPD for committing a victimless crime likely spurred by entrapment-style police work.
This is beyond hackery, Jenna. Unilluminating and pointless.

Regardless of being gay or not , a lewd act is a crime , so if someone have the urgency and don't care to it anywhere why are they risking to get their name published i live in samo and would like to know if my neighbor can be a show threat to my kids
Bob Bobbert June 7, 2012 at 04:22 pm
Gay, not gay, whatever. The bottom line is that this is a PUBLIC restroom frequented by children, I'm sure. Would you want your kids exposed to that?
Jane Bellomy June 7, 2012 at 06:28 pm
Absolutely NOT!!!

Vice President Joe Biden tried Tuesday to rally Congress to act on gun control legislation, sayingRead More that "the country has changed and [politicians] will pay a political price for not getting engaged and dealing with gun safety." "As proud as the president and I am of the progress we have made, we need Congress to act," Biden said in a speech delivered at the White House. "The American people are demanding it. We need to make sure that the voices of the ones we lost are the loudest ones we here in this fight." Specifically, Biden was referring to politicians like Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), who saw her approval rating plummet after she voted against legislation that would expand background checks. Sen. Jeff Flake's (R-AZ) and Sen. Mark Begich's (D-AK) ratings also took a nosedive. On the otherside, Democrats in red states, like Sens. Mary Landrieu (LA) and Kay Hagan (NC), got a slight boost in their approval ratings after they voted in favor of the gun control legislation. The vice president also released a set of federal guidelines Tuesday for developing high quality emergency operations for schools, higher education institutions and places of worship. "We made sure the guide reflects all the lessons we've learned over the years," he said.
