Man Charged with Receiving Stolen Property

John Footman was stopped by Santa Monica police after he was spotted pushing a bicycle with a U lock still attached to the back wheel.

On Aug. 22 at approximately 8 p.m. a patrol unit was driving east in the 500 block of Colorado Ave.  At this time officers observed a male subject walking westbound on the north side of the street.  The subject crossed the street against a red light pushing a bicycle through the intersection.

The officers conducted a pedestrian stop of the subject for crossing against the red light.  While speaking with this individual the officers noticed that the bike still had a “U” style lock attached to the rear wheel and locked to the bicycle frame.  Upon further questioning the subject told the officers that he and a friend had been shopping at a local market nearby.  The subject’s friend had stayed outside while he went shopping inside. When he exited his friend now had this bicycle and asked him to take the bicycle back to a residence located on the 500 block of Colorado Ave.

When the suspect was asked about his friend could not recall his last name or the unit number to his apartment.  He also could not explain why he did not have a key to the U-lock or where it might be.  As officers were placing the subject under arrest for 496(a) PC – Receiving Stolen Property, another male (victim) ran up and identified himself as the owner of the bicycle.  He then produced a key that opened the U-lock.
