Man Stabbed Sleeping on Bus Bench

Victim awakes to sharp pain in his back Tuesday morning in front of the Goodwill in downtown Santa Monica.

A man in his 50s was stabbed once in the back early Tuesday morning as slept on a bus bench in front of the Goodwill thrift store at the corner of Sixth Street and Santa Monica Boulevard.

He was hospitalized in serious but stable condition, according Santa Monica Police Sgt. Richard Lewis.

"The victim said he was sleeping, and he was awakened to a painful stick in his back," Lewis said.

Police received a 911 report at 5:43 a.m. from a caller who said a 58-year-old man was asking passersby for help.

"We arrived found he was suffering from a single stab wound to his back," Lewis said. "He didn't see a suspect."
