Upset by Breakup, Man Threatens to Jump From Hotel Roof

UPDATE: Ocean Avenue reopens by 5 p.m. after police and firefighters bring the man down.

A man upset by a break-up threatened to jump off the roof, 12 floors high, of the Fairmont Miramar Hotel on Tuesday afternoon, closing Ocean Avenue to traffic in both directions for about one hour.

Two city firefighters and two police officers wearing harnesses scaled the hotel to talk to the man, who was intoxicated, said Santa Monica Police Department spokesman Sgt. Richard Lewis.

After he closed his eyes and fell asleep, the man was taken down from the southwest corner of the roof. He was transported to a hospital for evaluation.

"He needed some help so we got him some help," said Lewis.

Lewis said the man's family was in the process of filing a missing person report with the Los Angeles Police Department when Santa Monica police responded to the incident.

Ocean Avenue reopened to traffic shortly before 5 p.m.

The man's identity was not immediately available, Lewis said.
