A 28-year-old man was killed and a police officer was injured today in a collision between a motor scooter and a Santa Monica Police Department cruiser.

It happened about 7:40 a.m. at the intersection of Pico Boulevard and Fourth Street, California Highway Patrol Officer Karina Munoz said.

The victim, operating a 2013 scooter, was headed east on Pico and the officer was in a patrol vehicle traveling north on Fourth Street, she said.

"For reasons still under investigation, the patrol vehicle and the motor scooter collided, which resulted in fatal injuries for the driver of the motor scooter," Munoz said.

The man was pronounced dead at a hospital, she said.

The officer suffered moderate injuries and also was taken to a hospital for treatment, Munoz said.

The age of the officer was not disclosed.

It was unclear if she was responding to a call at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.
