Motorist Killed on Santa Monica Freeway Identified

The crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday

Authorities Wednesday identified a motorist who was killed when his small sedan struck a detached trailer on the eastbound Santa Monica (10) Freeway.

The crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday near the Robertson Boulevard offramp from the eastbound 10, California Highway Patrol Officer Alex Rubio said.

Jose Espinoza, 55, of Los Angeles died at the scene, coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter said.

The crash came minutes after a call to the CHP warning of a detached equipment trailer straddling the No. 2 and 3 lanes, Rubio said. The driver who had been pulling the trailer had stopped on the right shoulder, he said.
