Police Nab Rape Suspect

Chino man suspected of attacking female jogger earlier this month on Santa Monica Beach.

Rape and attempted murder charges were filed against a man suspected of assaulting a woman during a pre-dawn run along Santa Monica Beach, the Santa Monica Police Department reported.

The suspect was arrested 5:30 a.m. Wednesday by the harbor patrol unit, near where the crime occurred.

He was identified by the police as 36-year-old Brandon Cross of Chino.

On Wednesday, officers "patrolling the north beach area, observed a possible suspect in the general area of the crime," said police department spokesman Sgt. Richard Lewis. "The suspect was detained; after additional investigation, the suspect was arrested."

Cross was arraigned Friday in Los Angeles County Superior Court on numerous felony charges, including one count of attempted murder, two counts of forcible rape, one count of sexual penetration by a foreign object, one count of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury and resisting officers.

Bail was set at $1.35 million.

The woman was assaulted about 4:50 a.m. Oct. 10 while running between Lifeguard Tower 8 and the waterline. She eventually fought off the attacker and ran to safety. He walked away.

Police circulated a composite sketch of the man and launched an "exhaustive search," Lewis said.

Nice job by SMPD -- they deserve a lot of credit.
Wendy Frederick October 22, 2012 at 11:09 PM
Congrats to SMPD!!! They always do the job! It's a relief to get this "creep" off the streets of Santa Monica! And, yes, I am SICK and TIRED of violence against women. It just has to stop!!

nice composite sketch Santa Monica welcomes these criminals to their town and calls them "homeless"...
Sharon October 23, 2012 at 04:26 AM
Glenn, I could not agree more. When is Santa Monica going to care about the violent impact these people have on our community????
Glenn E Grab October 23, 2012 at 06:33 AM
sharon, I'm surprised Santa Monica doesn't bus the bums in......I can see a lawsuit against the City coming out of this..
Brenda Barnes October 23, 2012 at 07:21 PM
Amazing how similar the composite photo is to this guy. Maybe potential rapists will think twice now.
Brenda Barnes October 23, 2012 at 07:23 PM
There is a column in the Palm Springs paper where I used to live about dumb criminals. This guy--how quickly did he need to shave off that beard???
Glenn E Grab October 23, 2012 at 07:42 PM
he probably stayed in Santa Monica for the free food...
Wendy Frederick October 23, 2012 at 10:15 PM
Unfortunately, all the neighboring towns bus the homeless in! Once the Expo Rail goes in, downtown will send them into Santa Monica, too! I think that's the biggest fear!
Deborah Lashever December 03, 2012 at 12:18 AM
Why do you think he was "homeless"?
Deborah Lashever December 03, 2012 at 12:20 AM
Who said he was "homeless"? I see nowhere that states that.
Brenda Barnes December 03, 2012 at 02:28 AM
Not only does the story not say he was homeless, it does say he's from Chino. The worst thing about these comments is how they all became about homeless people, as though there were any evidence at all the guy was homeless. Because he was on the beach at 4:50 a.m.? So was the woman. I s she homeless? It's just wrong to associate homelessness and crime like this.
Glenn E Grab December 03, 2012 at 04:48 PM
brenda, who, other than someone with nowhere else to go( often called "homeless"), would hang around the area where he had just raped a woman?.....
Brenda Barnes December 03, 2012 at 09:09 PM
Someone dumb enough not to shave off a full beard.
Deborah Lashever December 03, 2012 at 09:10 PM
Glenn, so people with houses never get caught by cops near where they did they crime? Do you have statistics for this? Also, "homeless" means "someone currently without housing", not "someone with nowhere else to go".
Brenda Barnes December 03, 2012 at 09:12 PM
You prove my point exactly. The guy is alleged to be an attempted murder and rapist, he is described in a composite photo as having a full beard, he is picked up in the area within a few hours, and you want to justify your coming to conclusions on his reasoning ability? Rational, fair people should not associate homelessness and crime without evidence. Nothing criminals do justifies anything you do, if you call yourself law-abiding, fair, and rational.
Glenn E Grab December 04, 2012 at 12:45 AM
Deborah.....I have concluded two things, he was homeless, and this isn't the first time he's done this....what are you, a "homeless advocate"....you might feel differenly if this happened to you or to someone you know...
Brenda Barnes December 04, 2012 at 03:20 AM
Off the subject, Glenn. The subject is not whether anyone approves of attempted murder and rape. It's whether you had any evidence to connect those crimes (alleged or real) with homelessness. That kind of fuzzy thinking is what leads people to wrongly accuse unhoused people of crimes, and then they and others to be opposed to all kinds of support for unhoused people.
Deborah Lashever December 04, 2012 at 06:27 AM
Glenn, Seriously? You are going to school me on rape? Hmmm...how many times do you think I have been raped as opposed to you? I am a female that was brought up in Los Angeles, for God's sake! Conservatively, at least 88% of women here have been raped or sexually molested at least once in their lives! I was even raped by two LAPD in a police car when I was a teenager! Stop your preaching. You obviously know NOTHING of what you speak. FYI, I am not a "homeless" advocate. I am a Justice advocate. A Truth advocate. My comments were concerning your comments (and others') on this thread regarding your obvious conclusion--with absolutely no facts--that this person that committed this horrific crime was "homeless". That is bullshit. And totally prejudiced. And by spouting your prejudiced bullshit you are prejudicing others. You do not have any facts or any intelligence to back up anything you have said. Best shut it down. You are doing no one any good. You just sound like a biased jerk. That is what I have concluded.
Glenn E Grab December 04, 2012 at 06:51 AM
Btenda, take a look at him, he's been in the sun a lot, he's got that homeless tan....besides, I'm sure he has a long criminal record....him being homeless doesn't reflect on other homeless people, any more than his ethnicity reflects on his race...it's just a fact...another fact, most homeless people are where they are because of drug and alcohol abuse...they couldn't hold a job if they were given one...
Glenn E Grab December 04, 2012 at 05:17 PM
Deborah, I will not stoop to your level of name calling....it's obvious by your posts that you have an agenda and cannot tolerate anyone disagreeing with you or it....thank you for sharing, nontheless....
Deborah Lashever December 05, 2012 at 04:30 AM
Glenn, look in the mirror. Buh bye...
Brenda Barnes December 05, 2012 at 05:58 AM
Speaking of name-calling, Glenn, I just can't discuss serious topics--and accusing people falsely is serious with me--with anyone who makes up facts and then insists they are true. Sorry. I just don't have the patience for it.
