Santa Monica Police to Crack Down on Motorcycle Safety

The main cause of motorcycle-involved crashes include speeding, unsafe turning and impairment due to alcohol and other drugs.

Santa Monica Police will increase patrols this month as part of a special motorcycle safety operation.

The operation set for Aug. 11 is meant to reduce the number of deaths and injuries involving motorcyclists, according to SMPD Lt. Richard Lewis.

Officers will be cracking down on drivers of motor vehicles and motorcyclists driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, speeding, making illegal turns and stop sign violations, Lewis said.

The main cause of motorcycle-involved crashes include speeding, unsafe turning and impairment due to alcohol and other drugs.

Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
