The commemorated the 10th anniversary of 9/11 on Sunday morning with 20 minutes of silence. The observance was held outside the SMFD's four community fire stations and began at 6:45 a.m.
Four hundred eleven emergency personnel—including 343 firefighters, 60 police officers and eight paramedics—were among the 2,977 people who died on 9/11. Five civilians with connections to Santa Monica also died.
Each year, the SMPD holds 9/11 observance ceremonies, per the International Association of Fire Chiefs' recommended protocols, to remember the deceased. Members of the public and city employees are invited to participate.
