'Swimmer in Distress' Was A False Alarm

Four fire trucks and a helicopter were dispatched to the beach near Ocean Front Walk in Santa Monica but the call turned out to be "erroneous" authorities said.

By City News Service

County fire department personnel and lifeguard were searching for a reported "swimmer in distress'' in the ocean off 1550 Ocean Front Walk in Santa Monica, says county fire Inspector Tony Akins.

The department dispatched four vessels and a helicopter, along with lifeguard personnel to the scene. But it turns out the reports of a distressed swimmer made by some paddlers in the ocean proved to be erroneous and the search effort was being wrapped up as of 8:12 p.m., Akins says.
