UPDATED: Teen Taken Into Custody Over Homemade Explosive Devices

Police discovered two explosives, which resembled a pipe bomb, in an apartment on Wednesday night.

A 16-year-old was taken into custody Wednesday night after Santa Monica police officers discovered two homemade explosive devices in his apartment. The explosives, which resembled a pipe bomb, were destroyed in the front yard of the apartment complex after residents were evacuated.

The suspect "was booked on several open charges and remains in custody," Sgt. Richard Lewis told Santa Monica Patch on Thursday morning. He added that the investigation is ongoing.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m., when police were conducting a probation search at the apartment complex, which is located on the 1100 block of 12th St. It is not clear what prompted the search.

After discovering a suspicious device, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, along with a special weapons team, responded to the building.

Authorities used multiple explosions to destroy the devices.

Investigators removed illegal fireworks, boxes, envelopes and bags of unknown items from the apartment.
