Catherine Greig, the longtime companion of reputed Boston mobster , pleaded not guilty in a Boston court on Thursday to charges that she harbored and concealed a fugitive.
Greig was arraigned on the charges in the John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse. The entire process took less than a minute: Greig entered her plea and was then returned to custody. A new court date was set for Sept. 29 at 11:30 a.m.
Greig attorney Kevin Reddington met with reporers outside of the courtroom and said he would seek her release at the next court date. Reddington said Greig is not a flight risk.
"Where's she going to go?" said Reddington.
Prosecutors allege in that she conspired to keep Bulger concealed from authorities since 1995 and took part in various ruses to allude authorities, including the fabrication of 10 different identities. Bulger, who is on trial in connection to 19 murders, among other alleged offenses, was one of the FBI's top fugitives until his capture on June 22.
Some of the allegations are as follows:
- She and Bulger posed as a married couple under false identity.
- She obtained false identification, including social security numbers and drivers licenses, for herself and Bulger.
- She and Bulger purchased goods and paid for things like rent and prescriptions using cash and money orders to conceal their identities.
- She and Bulger would communicate with people in Massachusetts using methods to mask their identities and locations.
- She shopped for groceries, clothing and other household items for Bulger, enabling him to minimize his time in public.
Greig, if convicted, faces up to five years in prison followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine, according to a press release by the U.S. District Attorney's office.
Bulger pleaded not guilty in the same courthouse July 6 to 19 counts of murder.
