City Council Unanimously Approves Hotel Projects

The approval came after the developer reached a labor agreement with workers union.

The Santa Monica City Council unanimously approved Tuesday the development of two mid-price hotels in downtown.

The hotels will be located across from the Expo Line terminus, near the intersection of Fifth Street and Colorado Avenue. The Courtyard by Marriott, 1554 Fifth St., will have 136 guest rooms and the Hampton Inn by Hilton, 501 Colorado Ave., will have 143 rooms. Both hotels will be six stories tall and feature underground parking structures.

The approval of the two separate projects came after OTO Development, the company building the hotels, reached an agreement with the United Here Local 11 union to pay workers an hourly wage of at least $15.37. The city had recommended an hourly minimum wage of $14.08.

City staff in its reports to council members before the vote Tuesday said that both hotels will create 52 jobs, generate approximately $1.5 million in tax revenue and $2.74 million in net fiscal benefit to the city annually.

The next step is for OTO Development to obtain approval from the Architectural Review Board.
