Closed PCH Lane to Open by End of Sept.

As previously announced, late-night and early-morning lane closures will still take place on Santa Monica's portion of the highway through early 2012.

There's good news for Malibu and Pacific Palisades residents who use the Pacific Coast Highway, but not so much for Santa Monica dwellers.

The city of Los Angeles recently announced the closed lane of southbound Pacific Coast Highway from Temescal Canyon Road to Entrada Drive would reopen by the end of September.

However, after that lane opens, PCH lanes in Santa Monica from Entrada to the will still be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through early next year, Los Angeles Department of Public Works Public Information Officer Michelle Vargas said.

The Santa Monica plan is consistent with what the LADPW announced in March, the only update being that one lane in each direction will be open during the closure.

The lane closures are due to the construction of a 4,500-foot gravity relief sewer that will stretch from Will Rogers State Beach in Pacific Palisades to the city of Santa Monica. It will capture storm water headed toward the Santa Monica Bay that is not taken in by the existing Coastal Interceptor Sewer.

The southbound stretch of PCH has been closed all hours since June except during the 405 closure in mid-July. The lane was supposed to reopen in August. Vargas said the work stoppage during what was popularly known as   was a factor in the PCH lane not being able to reopen by August.
