Hotel Workers March on City Hall to Demand Higher Minimum Wages

UNITE HERE Local 11, headed to Santa Monica City Hall Friday to demand a minimum wage of $15 for new hotels.

On Friday, Aug. 30, more than 20 Santa Monica hotel workers and members of the union UNITE HERE Local 11, delivered a petition to the City of Santa Monica Manager's office calling for a raise in the minimum wage for workers at new hotels to $15.  

South Carolina-based OTO Development has proposed a minimum wage of $12.85 for two new hotels it is planning to build at the corner of 5th Street and Colorado Avenue.

That amount was based on the March 2012 decision by the Santa Monica City Council.

UNITE HERE Research Analyst Rachel Torres sent a letter to Patch on Friday following the event saying, “The City of Santa Monica leadership thanked [us] for coming and [said it] looks forward to working together."
