Last Day Announced For Santa Monica's New Deal-Era Post Office

A new location will open on Monday, July 1 on Seventh Street in Santa Monica.

The last day of operation for the historic Santa Monica Post Office at 1248 5th St. will be Saturday, June 29, officials announced Thursday.

Built by then-president Franklin D. Roosevelt's Works Projects Administration, it opened with pomp—red, white and blue bunting strung across the lawn—in July of 1938.

Plans call for the post office to be open for a half-day from 9 a.m. to noon that Saturday, according to USPS spokesman Richard Maher. After that, the retail lobby service and P.O. Box mail will not be available to the public at the location. To pick up mail that day, residents will need a photo ID.

A new location at 1653 Seventh St. will open at 9 a.m. Monday, July 1, Maher said.

The hours will be Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. P.O. Box customers will have the same P.O. Box number and ZIP Code, as well as the same key since the boxes will be physically moved into the new facility, according to Maher.
