Letter to the Editor: Ballot Initiative Would Provide Billions for Schools

504,742 valid signatures of California registered voters are needed by Sept. 30.

My name is Harrison Wills. I am a Santa Monica resident, green business owner and the newly elected President of the Associated Students at .

I am asking for your help. Today we have an opportunity to make a historic difference in California public education funding.

A new ballot initiative (CA Oil Extraction Fee, Prop 1481) would generate between $2 and $3 billion dollars for public education, including K-12 , community colleges, the University of California and California State Universities. It would tax oil corporations, not consumers at the pump.

But this can only happen if we are able to gather 504,742 valid signatures of California registered voters by Sept. 30.

Every college in California should be tabling and gathering signatures on campus. Student clubs, individual activists and student governments can all help lead the way! We have thousands of signature forms printed which we can give to you and your friends for signature-gathering.

You can also contact me directly for more information or ways to help. Thank you for your support and dedication to public education.
