Post Office Preservation Covenant Heads to SaMo City Council Tonight

At tonight's City Council meeting staff will recommend a proposal that will designate the 75-year-old downtown post office building as a city landmark.

As a result of concerted efforts by The Santa Monica Conservancy and the City's Landmarks Commission, a covenant has been drawn up to protect Santa Monica’s 75-year-old Downtown post office.

The building was closed back in June and its services were relocated to 7th Street.

The Santa Monica Conservancy stepped in to lobby for landmark status when the building was put up for sale last year.

The final draft of the covenant will now be presented tonight to the City Council, in the hopes that the council will designate it a City landmark.

Even if the council approves the covenant, the change in status will not occur until after the building is purchased.
