Q&A With Assembly Candidates: Working Across the Aisle

In its third installment in a week-long series of questions with candidates in the 50th Assembly District, Patch asks whether they'll work across party lines when it's time to balance the budget.

Editor's Note: Through June 5, we will publish a Q&A with the candidates vying to represent voters in the 50th Assembly District. Each candidate was asked to respond in 300 words or less. Their unedited answers are published below their photos above this article.

For its third question, Patch asked:

When it comes time to balance the state budget, will you negotiate with legislators across the aisle?

The are Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom, 53rd Assemblywoman Betsy Butler, political organizer Torie Osborn and attorney Brad Torgan. Scroll through the photos above for their answers.

Portions of the Santa Monica Mountains, Agoura Hills, Topanga, Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, Bel Air, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Carthay Square, West Hollywood, much of Hollywood, Hancock Park and Miracle Mile make up the new 50th district.

The top two vote-getters in the June 5 primary election will advance to the Nov. 6 general election regardless of party preference or whether one candidate receives a majority of votes in the primary.

Torie Osborne said: "It is impossible to balance a budget if you do not have the tools to raise revenue."
California doesn't have a revenue problem. California has a spending problem. If I continued to spend money I didn't have, I'd be on the street or in jail. Those who do that here are up for election.

Vice President Joe Biden tried Tuesday to rally Congress to act on gun control legislation, sayingRead More that "the country has changed and [politicians] will pay a political price for not getting engaged and dealing with gun safety." "As proud as the president and I am of the progress we have made, we need Congress to act," Biden said in a speech delivered at the White House. "The American people are demanding it. We need to make sure that the voices of the ones we lost are the loudest ones we here in this fight." Specifically, Biden was referring to politicians like Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), who saw her approval rating plummet after she voted against legislation that would expand background checks. Sen. Jeff Flake's (R-AZ) and Sen. Mark Begich's (D-AK) ratings also took a nosedive. On the otherside, Democrats in red states, like Sens. Mary Landrieu (LA) and Kay Hagan (NC), got a slight boost in their approval ratings after they voted in favor of the gun control legislation. The vice president also released a set of federal guidelines Tuesday for developing high quality emergency operations for schools, higher education institutions and places of worship. "We made sure the guide reflects all the lessons we've learned over the years," he said.
