Saluting Fallen Soldiers for Memorial Day: See Photos of Arlington West on SM Beach

As is their tradition, volunteers with Veterans for Peace set up the Arlington West memorial on on Sunday, commemorating the lives of soldiers who have died in war.

The display, which the nonprofit group arranges on the beach every Sunday from sunrise to sunset, consists of crosses that represent the fallen troops. On Sunday, people flocking to the beach for Memorial Day took time to pay homage to the deceased soldiers.

The first Arlington West memorial in Santa Monica was set up in 2004 following the invasion of Iraq. Its name refers to the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

The Arlington West mission statement is "to honor the fallen and wounded to provide a place to grieve to acknowledge the human cost of war to encourage dialogue among people with varied points of view to educate the public about the needs of those returning from war," according to ArlingtonWestSantaMonica.org.
