With the cancelation of Redevelopment Agency funding, the City of Santa Monica’s ability to put needed money into affordable housing was cut drastically.  It is now crucial that local governments have the discretion to make sound decisions regarding affordable housing production and policy within their borders, as well as the tools in hand to effectuate these goals.    That AB 1229 would restore our city’s zoning authority for inclusionary housing means that it would provide the best chance at achieving economic diversity, which is one of this city’s goals.

As you know, the Expo Line will be arriving within our city limits in the near future.  Transit-oriented neighborhoods are being planned and new opportunities are being developed.  When the construction ends, and the dust settles, the end of the Expo Line will be the beginning of a new Santa Monica.  Your support of AB 1229 will help to insure that this beginning in Santa Monica is beneficial to all who choose to live here.
