Local Lawmaker's Proposed Ban on Performing Orcas Tabled a Year

An state Assembly committee considering a proposed ban on captive orca breeding and shows has been tabled for a year, according to the Sacramento Bee

Assemblyman Richard Bloom, D-Santa Monica, said he was driven to author the Orca Welfare and Safety Act by allegations of animal abuse made in the documentary Blackfish.

According to the Bee:

Noting the massive interest his bill has attracted and conceding that committee members seemed "unprepared" to cast a fully informed vote, Bloom agreed on Tuesday to hold the bill for an interim study. That process could take more than a year.
