Santa Monica Marathoner Named Woman of the Year

Julie Weiss of Santa Monica runs 1,362.4 miles to raise awareness about pancreatic cancer and $200,000 to fight it.

Running 52 marathons in 52 weeks, Julie Weiss of Santa Monica raised awareness and $200,000 for the Manhattan Beach-based Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Now, Weiss, 43, is being honored on May 19 by Sen. Ted Lieu as the 2013 Woman of the Year for the 28th Senate District. 
   
Weiss started with the Rome Marathon in March 2012 and ended with the Los Angeles Marathon in March. She ran a total of 1,362.4 miles. 

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. 

Lieu will present Weiss with her Woman-of-the-Year award Sunday, May 19 at about 10 a.m. during closing ceremonies at the finish line during PurpleStride Los Angeles. The 5k run and walk at Exposition Park in Los Angeles is aimed to help raise money for pancreatic cancer.
