Santa Monica Pier Bridge Redesign Focus of Workshop

The Santa Monica Pier Bridge was originally constructed in the 1940s.

The city of Santa Monica is hosting a community workshop in June to explore what residents think the redesign of the bridge leading to the Santa Monica Pier should include.

"The city of Santa Monica is currently working on the concept design," according to the project's website

The community workshop is set for 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 18 at the Ken Edwards Center, 1527 4th St. in Santa Monica.

The city is hoping for an interactive community workshop that will help shape the vision for the redesign and reconstruction of the Santa Monica Pier Bridge. The bridge was constructed in the 1940s.

The project calls for the demolition of the existing Pier Bridge and construction of a new bridge, which will feature two vehicular traffic lanes. The new bridge will be wider to accomodate pedestrian and bicycle traffic from downtown Santa Monica to the pier.

According to the city, the project is eligible for reimbursement of federal funds. The changes are needed to meet current seismic and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.

For more project information, visit the Pier Bridge Replacement project website at www.smconstructs.org/smpierbridge. Those who wish to attend the workshop are asked to RSVP by emailing selim.eren@smgov.net or calling (310) 458-2200 x5107.
