Patch's Primary Election Night Live Chat Archive

Readers join Patch editors to offer reactions to Tuesday's voting on 68 elected offices and two state ballot measures.

You've voted, or maybe you haven't, but you still have a lot to say about Tuesday's primary election.

Whether you are for or against taxes on cigarettes or have a particular state Assembly race you are closely watching, we want to hear from you.

The live chat begins at 6 p.m. Patch local editors and contributors will report on the latest developments leading up to the the night's results. We'll take your comments and questions on the election and its impact until about 11 p.m.

Voters will decide the fate of two state ballot measures—one to add a $1 tax on cigarettes to fund cancer research and another to reduce the amount of time politicians can serve in the state Legislature from 14 years to 12 years.

We'll have tweets, photos and polls throughout the evening and reports, plus links to stories from Patch and other election sources.

With still mostly mail ballots counted in the U.S. 47th Congressional District race, the joint returns for L.A. and Orange counties, the race is led right now by State Sen. Alan Lowentha (D) at 33.6%, with Long Beach City Councilman Gary DeLong (R) in second with 27.6%, and former U.S. Congressman Steve Kuykendall (R) in third with 11.3%.

Just because Mr. Bloomfield knows that the (R) word is extremely unpopular in the district he's running-in, doesn't mean that he isn't still a Republican. If Pete Wilson writes a letter (sent only to those listed on the voting rolls as Republicans) telling his people to vote for this guy - and not the one with the (R) by his name - then you know that this is just a stealth candidacy.
Didn't this guy chair the George W. and McCain campaigns locally? Sounds an awful lot like a Republican, to me. The last thing we need is another Koch-sucker in Washington. Waxman is second-to-last thing, but let's keep our priorities straight.

Vice President Joe Biden tried Tuesday to rally Congress to act on gun control legislation, sayingRead More that "the country has changed and [politicians] will pay a political price for not getting engaged and dealing with gun safety." "As proud as the president and I am of the progress we have made, we need Congress to act," Biden said in a speech delivered at the White House. "The American people are demanding it. We need to make sure that the voices of the ones we lost are the loudest ones we here in this fight." Specifically, Biden was referring to politicians like Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), who saw her approval rating plummet after she voted against legislation that would expand background checks. Sen. Jeff Flake's (R-AZ) and Sen. Mark Begich's (D-AK) ratings also took a nosedive. On the otherside, Democrats in red states, like Sens. Mary Landrieu (LA) and Kay Hagan (NC), got a slight boost in their approval ratings after they voted in favor of the gun control legislation. The vice president also released a set of federal guidelines Tuesday for developing high quality emergency operations for schools, higher education institutions and places of worship. "We made sure the guide reflects all the lessons we've learned over the years," he said.
