SM Baykeeper Praises Styrofoam Ban

The Hermosa Beach City Council votes to move forward with drafting a ban on using styrofoam containers in restaurants.

Santa Monica Baykeeper is cheering a decision by the Hermosa Beach City Council to move forward with drafting a ban on styrofoam. On Tuesday night, the council voted 3-2 to move forward with drafting a ban on using such containers in restaurants, as well as educating food vendors and customers about polystyrene, according to .

The council's decision "is a victory for the ocean and the community," Executive Director Liz Crosson said in a statement. "Eliminating products known to be toxic and harmful to humans and wildlife, and that are polluting our rivers and ocean is the most effective way to address this problem.”

Crosson spoke at the meeting as well, saying that when polystyrene becomes litter, money then is spent on beach clean-ups to remove the marine debris.
