Free Lecture on Architect Julia Morgan
California architect Julia Morgan was a pioneering woman in her field with many "firsts" in her life - one of the first female civil engineering graduates from UC Berkeley; the first woman to be admitted to the prestigious Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris; the first woman licensed to practice architecture in California; and one of very few women in her time to head her own architectural firm. She was one of the country's most versatile and prolific architects, but has been overlooked for many years.
The Santa Monica Conservancy and the Annenberg Community Beach House join Julia Morgan 2012, a statewide festival commemorating the remarkable life and work of this non-traditional lady.A free lecture on Julia Morgan will be presented by Christy McAvoy, principal of Historic Resources Group, who has delved extensively into this subject as part of the Historic Structures Report for the Beach House. The lecture, sponsored by the Santa Monica Conservancy, will be held at 4 PM on Saturday, September 8 in Multi-Purpose Room of the Santa Monica Main Library. Reservations are advised
Special Julia Morgan tours at the Beach House are scheduled in October and November; check the Beach House website www.annenbergbeachhouse.com in October for specific dates and times.
