Grants Awarded to Teachers at JAMS, Olympic High School, Lincoln Middle School

Twenty-four grants and one "super grant" are distributed by the Education Foundation.

Teachers at , , and are among the recipients of the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation's Academic Enrichment Grants for 2011-12, a member of the organization has told Santa Monica Patch.

The 24 grants, which are for up to $1,000 each, will go to teachers at 14 schools throughout the . They are to be used in classrooms during the 2011-12 school year.

Additionally, a "super grant" of $4,500 has been awarded to teachers at . The grant is given to a school, grade level, core or department and is intended to foster collaboration and creativity between teachers. The Olympic High School teachers' grant will be used to purchase of a Smart Board for use in math classes.

The AEGs are intended to help teachers bolster their classrooms with state-of-the-art improvements. For example, a teacher at the will use the grant money to purchase high-powered microscopes for the school's fifth grade science classroom. Other classrooms will be using the grant money to buy iPads, photo-memory books and other new technology.

Teachers at grade levels ranging from preschool through high school, as well as teachers involved with child development and adult education, can apply for the grants.

Kelly Bates, a Samohi Spanish teacher who received one of the AEGs, said in a statement, "I will make sure that this contributes to a richer educational experience for all [who] pass through my classroom.”

The Education Foundation, founded in 1982, provides financial support to academic, arts and athletics programs in the SMMUSD. The organization consists of parents, business leaders and other members of the community.
