Samohi Football Among Western Division Elite

Vikings are just outside the CIF-SS preseason Top 10; league rival Culver City is No. 9.

The CIF Southern Section office released its 2011 preseason football rankings Thursday afternoon and is on the list of "others" in the Western Division, just outside the Top 10.

Ocean League rival Culver City is ranked No. 9 in the Western Division, one spot ahead of Rio Mesa from the Pacific View League.

Topping the division is Chaminade of the Mission League, followed by No. 2 Arroyo Grande (Pac-7 League); No. 3 Dominguez (San Gabriel Valley League); No. 4 Serra and No. 5 St. Paul (Mission League); No. 6 Santa Maria St. Joseph and No. 7 Atascadero (Pac-7 League); and No. 8 St. Francis (Mission League).

Joining Santa Monica on the list of "others" is Ocean League rival Beverly Hills, along with Adolfo Camarillo and Oxnard (Pacific View League); Buena (Channel League); and Cathedral (Mission League). 

Samohi, Culver City and Beverly Hills all ended the regular season 6-4 and finished in a three-way tie for second in league last season. Based on point differential, Culver City and Beverly Hills were given playoff berths but Samo was not.

South Torrance, which scrimmages Samohi on Sept. 2, is ranked No. 2 in the Northwest Division and Compton Centennial, which hosts the Vikings in Week 5, is on the "others" list in the Northwest Division. Valencia, which hosts Samohi in Week 4, is ranked No. 5 in the Northern Division.
