Samohi Football Still One of the "Others"

The Vikings remain just outside of the Top 10 in the Western Division poll.

The CIF Southern Section office has released its new football rankings, and is still on the list of "other" teams in the Western Division, just outside the Top 10, after Zero Week games.

The Vikings didn't play last week and . Joining Samohi on the "others" list is Ocean League rival Beverly Hills, which opens the season Friday at Santa Barbara.

Another Ocean League rival, Culver City, was ranked No. 9 in the Western Division preseason poll and remains there, but Oxnard replaced fellow Pacific View League school Rio Mesa at No. 10. Culver City opens the season Friday against West Torrance.

Chaminade of the Mission League remains in the top spot, but preseason No. 2 Arroyo Grande of the Pac-7 League lost and dropped to No. 3 behind Santa Fe Springs St. Paul, which won its opener over La Mirada 24-7 to move up from No. 5.

Rounding out the poll are No. 4 Dominguez (San Gabriel Valley League) and No. 5 Serra (which each dropped one spot after losing their openers); No. 6 Santa Maria St. Joseph and No. 7 Atascadero (Pac-7 League), which both open this week; and No. 8 La Canada St. Francis (Mission League), which also has yet to play.

Joining Samohi and Beverly Hills on the list of "others" are Ventura (Channel League), Camarillo (Pacific View League), Righetti (Pac-7 League) Buena (Channel League), Cathedral (Mission League) and Rio Mesa, which opens the season Friday against San Marcos.

South Torrance, which scrimmaged Samo last Friday, didn't play and remained ranked No. 2 in the Northwest Division while Compton Centennial, which hosts the Vikings in Week 5, remained on the "others" list in that division after winning its opener 42-36 over neighborhood rival Compton. Valencia, which hosts Samohi in Week 4, remained No. 5 in the Northern Division.

Despite a resounding 43-14 win over Animo Leadership on Saturday night, did not crack the "others" category in the Northeast Division.
