Samohi Volleyball #2 in Preseason Poll

The Vikings are second to Pasadena Poly in the Division 3AA rankings.

The first CIF Southern Section preseason sports polls of the fall season have been released, and is ranked second in the girls volleyball Division 3AA Top 10 poll. 

The poll was voted on, coordinated and finalized by the CIF Southern Section Girls Volleyball Coaches Advisory Committee. Top 10 polls for each division will be updated weekly throughout the season.

Pasadena Poly is ranked No. 1, followed by Samo, Chadwick, Cypress, Mayfield, Placentia Valencia, Quartz Hill, Santa Ynez and Lancaster. In the No. 10 spot is Samo's Ocean League rival Culver City.

The Vikings, coached by Liane Sato, lost to Lancaster in the second round of the playoffs last season.

Los Alamitos is the preseason favorite in Division 1AA. Completing the list of initial No. 1 squads are L.A. Marymount (Division 1A), St. Lucy's (Division 2AA), Downey (Division 2A), Campbell Hall (Division 3A), St. Margaret's (Division 4AA), Hemet (Division 4A), Desert Christian Academy (Division 5AA) and Firebaugh (Division 5A).

Pacifica Christian is ranked fourth in Division 4A after winning 23 matches and going undefeated in the Heritage League last season under coach Billy Allen. The Seawolves lost in the CIF quarterfinals to Bell-Jeff, which is ranked second behind Hemet in the preseason poll.

Fairmont Prep is No. 3, Grace Brethren is No. 5, Milken Community is No. 6, San Jacinto is No. 7, Frazier Mountain is No. 8, Connelly is No. 9 and Azusa is No. 10.

In Division 5A, Lighthouse Christian Academy is ranked No. 7. After Desert Christian Academy are Sierra Canyon, Riverside Christian, Victor Valley Christian, Downey Calvary Chapel and Rolling Hills Prep. The No. 8-ranked team in the division is Hesperia Christian, followed by Liberty Christian and Apple Valley Christian.

Lighthouse Christian Academy will be under the direction of first-year coach Emily Hamilton. Last November, the Saints lost to Riverside Christian in the section quarterfinals under previous coach Stephanie Sommer.

The girls volleyball season officially begins August 29 and the playoffs will start November 7. The CIF Southern Section finals will be Nov. 18-19 at Cypress College and the state tournament will be from Nov. 22 to December 3.
