SMC Football Players Earn Accolades
Corsairs Medina and Wright are named conference Players of the Week.
The announced its offensive and defensive players of the week on Wednesday, and both play for . Quarterback Alfonso Medina and defensive back Rico Wright were recognized for their performances in the Corsairs' 33-9 win over Santa Barbara City College on Saturday.
Medina, a freshman from Venice High School, received the honor after completing 22 of 29 passes for 339 yards and four touchdowns against the Vaqueros. He is averaging 233 yards per game and has thrown for 1,168 total yards and 13 touchdowns in the team's first five games.
After spotting Santa Barbara an early nine-point lead, the Corsairs scored 33 unanswered points. Medina connected with Aaron Jones for a 17-yard score just before halftime, then threw a 30-yard touchdown strike to Kris Comass, a 78-yard scoring strike to and a 45-yard touchdown pass to Comass that closed the scoring.

Wright, a sophomore from Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, was rewarded for his two key interceptions in the game. He helped the Corsairs defense force six turnovers and shut out the host Vaqueros over the final three quarters. Daniel Pipken had two fumble recoveries on special teams and Gerald Blockmon had 10 tackles, two for a loss, and recovered a fumble.
